In general, network protocol using packet-switching technique to transmit and receive messages in the form of packets. A network protocol defines rules and conventions of communication between network devices. Network protocols include mechanisms for devices to make and to know the relationship between networks. Rules and other formal communication should be understandable for network devices to communicate. Network protocol also describes the requirements and appropriate interaction.
Networking protocols suites describe processes such as :
- The format or structure of the message
- The process by which networking devices share information about pathways with other networks
- How and when error and system messages are passed between devices
- The setup and termination of data transfer sessions
