Network Media

Network Media
The communication system via a computer network is done through the network media. Media network provides a way in which the message in the form of files and data can be sent through the source to the destination. Especially in modem network that uses three types of media to connect devices and provide the path where the data can be sent. Network media are :
  • Metallic wires within cables
  • Glass or plastic fibers (fiber optic cable)
  • Wireless transmission
Signal encoding that must occur for the message to be sent through the network media is different for each type of network media. For example in metallic cable, data is encoded into electrical impulses that match specific patterns. Then the optical fiber transmission relies on pulses of light, both visible light and infrared. Meanwhile, the wireless transmission of electromagnetic wave pattern is described in a variety of bit values.

There are so many different types of network media features and benefits according to user needs. Network media have different characteristics depending on depending on what the network media used. Criteria for choosing a network media are :
  • The distance the media can successfully carry a signal
  • The environment in which the media is to be installed
  • The amount of data and the speed at which it must be transmitted
  • The cost of the media and installation
